Phlebotomy is the practice of drawing blood from patients and taking the blood specimens to the laboratory to prepare for testing. As a phlebotomy technician, you are an important member of the clinical laboratory team. New diagnostic techniques, clinical laboratory technology, and automated instruments have greatly increased the volume of, and demand for, medical laboratory testing.
This program will emphasize the skills necessary to properly draw blood specimens by venipuncture and capillary puncture and the proper handling of the specimen for clinical laboratory testing. Issues dealing with patient contact, medical ethics, and legal issues will be discussed. Anatomy and physiology of the vascular system, as they pertain to phlebotomy, will be reviewed.
