Precision Machining Operations

Program Overview

Machinists are trained professionals who use machinery to make or modify metal, plastic, or wood products. Students learn the basics of setting up and operating machine tools like computer controlled mills and lathes, the drill press, grinders, manual metal lathes, and mills as well as using common metal-working hand tools, including precision measuring instruments. Key components of the Precision Machining course include blueprint reading, quality control, metal properties, and heat treatment of machine-ready metals. To be work ready, students are trained to program, set-up, and operate computer numeric controlled (CNC) machines. These high wage, high skill jobs can be found in fields such as electrical submersible oil pump production, aviation and aircraft production and maintenance, plastic and PVC fittings, and valve production (just to name a few).
